HOW TO PHOTOGRAPH YOUR ARTWORK

a FEW TIPS & TRICKS

to help guide you from instagram shots to product photographs for your website. Disclaimer, although I took photography at college I am not a professional, I am only talking through my experience!

equipment & tech

Tech recommendations:

  • DSLR camera or phone (the latest phones have great camera specs - ps. I use my iPhone all the time!)

  • studio lighting ( natural lighting is best however)

  • tripod

  • phone tripod or attachment

do you need all of these? No.

do you need them all at once? No.

A camera, natural lighting and your work is all you need to get started.

composition & subject

social media

products

How you want your photography style to look depends on what your subject is or outline for you photograph. For example product photographs are for me about styling, good lighting and trying to connect the piece with a buyer. When you think of your ideal customers what do their homes look like? How do you see your work in their house? Brainstorm some ideas and then break it down into how to apply this to a photoshoot for your products.

Whereas with social media photographs these can be more creative, more personal, more raw… the list goes on! Again it depends on who you are as a creative and who you are trying to reach. I like to use light and space in my photographs, you might like busier more colourful photographs. It’s all personal choice, play with different styles, take photos in different settings and see what you like most!

some ideas to get you started

  • self portrait shoot

  • sketchbook flat lay

  • studio shoot

  • what inspires you - take a photo

  • black and white

  • close up details of your work

  • style your painting in your home

Most importantly remember that photography & social media are there for you to be creative in a different way. Don’t get overwhelmed with posting everyday, or with taking perfect photos or having the best tech. Just have fun and enjoy the process!
