Packing art supplies

I have taken a handful of trips this year to stunning places and I just had to take my art supplies with me. However deciding what to take can be daunting and confusing. I thought I would offer some tips and tricks that may help you take your art supplies away with you.

what to take

limit your materials

Step 1:

Do not bring your entire studio.. I have learnt this the hard way! The first trip I took with my art supplies I packed so much stuff and didn’t end up using most of it. I know when you’re in the studio you have access to everything and the thought of taking a limited amount of supplies can be worrying, but I promise you’ll thank me later.

What i take:

  • Two sketchbooks, 1 large, 1 small

  • 1 pencil & 3 coloured pencils

  • 5 tubes of acrylic paint

  • one black & one white tube

  • washi tape

  • binder clips x 4

  • collapsible water pot

  • 3 brushes

  • Mini water sprayer

  • 5 x water soluble wax crayons

location studies

Have fun with what you’re making. Try new things, explore your views in all different styles ways and colours if you are a beginner.

take reference photos

Make sure to take a lot of reference photos. Sometimes I use this for future moodboards and bodies of work to go alongside the studies. It is also really useful if you can’t finish your sketch at the time out in the landscape, this way you can refer back to it later.

Most importantly have fun, make a mess, paint in the rain and don’t get too attached to a perfect page or painting!
